Fort DeSoto Park
Saturday, March 7th, 2009Fort DeSoto Park is just a 25 minute (or so) drive south along the Gulf. The fort was built in the late nineteenth century and you can still tour around it (free of admission). It’s a nice spot for a picnic and an afternoon at the beach.

The beach has been voted as America’s best, and with the wide expanses of white sand and natural surroundings, you can quickly see why.

There is even a special beach for dogs, where they are allowed to run around without a leash. Pretty funny to watch, until you realize you’re essentially lounging in a giant litter box.
Fort DeSoto also has a cool kayak/canoe rental area where you can rent a kayak or canoe and explore the intercoastal. Some boaters have spotted manatees!

Pack a picnic and spend the whole day here!
