Is there a better way to spend the afternoon than this?

Fort DeSoto Park

March 7th, 2009

Fort DeSoto Park is just a 25 minute (or so) drive south along the Gulf. The fort was built in the late nineteenth century and you can still tour around it (free of admission). It’s a nice spot for a picnic and an afternoon at the beach.

The beach has been voted as America’s best, and with the wide expanses of white sand and natural surroundings, you can quickly see why.

There is even a special beach for dogs, where they are allowed to run around without a leash. Pretty funny to watch, until you realize you’re essentially lounging in a giant litter box.

Fort DeSoto also has a cool kayak/canoe rental area where you can rent a kayak or canoe and explore the intercoastal. Some boaters have spotted manatees!

Pack a picnic and spend the whole day here!

Beach Birds

February 23rd, 2009

You don’t have to go far to see beautiful (and surprisingly approachable) coastal birds. Just step outside to the dock or the little beach! You’ll see plenty of egrets, seagulls, and pelicans, and you’ll probably hear the wild green parrots chatting away in one of the tall palms.

Fun at the Gulf

February 22nd, 2009

The large Gulf beach with its perfect white sand is just a few blocks from the house. Can you believe these photos were taken in December?
